Exhibition Reception: Workers’ Villages

Exhibition Reception: Workers’ Villages

You are invited to the official opening of the Workers’ Villages exhibition in the Science Gallery in Dublin on November 9th, at 5.30 pm.

RSVP here.

After an initial outing at the Ploughing Championships, the Workers’ Villages exhibition will officially launch in Dublin with words from guest speakers Tania Banotti from Creative Ireland and Fergal McCabe, author of the book “Ambition and Achievement: The Civic Visions of Frank Gibney”

The Reimagine Workers’ Villages exhibition is a celebration of the work and legacy of architect Frank Gibney by the Irish Architecture Foundation, and the contribution of the communities that were created through his innovative Bord na Móna villages. Built in the 1950s to house the growing workforce for the national peat industry, they represented a new departure in rural housing and continue to provide lessons in compact, sustainable design. Through the Creative Ireland funded Workers’ Villages project, architects Evelyn D’Arcy, David Jameson, Caelan Bristow, and Mike Haslam have been working with workers’ villages in Cloontuskert and Kilcormac to explore their built heritage during a period of major change for the communities.

If you are interested in learning more about the broader contexts for this project, the IAF is hosting a colloquium prior to this reception. You can read more about this event, and book a spot here.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Housing Unlocked exhibition. You can find out more about this fantastic exhibition here.

Workers’ Villages is part of Creative Ireland’s Creative Climate Action Fund. This Creative Ireland initiative supports creative, cultural and artistic projects that build awareness around climate change and empowers citizens to make meaningful behavioural changes.
