Colloquium Open Call: Workers’ Villages, What Next?

The Science Gallery Dublin, Naughton Institute, Trinity College Dublin

Colloquium: November 9th, 3 pm – 5pm
Public Reception: November 9th, 5.30 pm

The Irish Architecture Foundation is inviting submissions for essays to be presented at a colloquium on the Bord na Mona villages created for peat industry workers in the 1950s. Alongside invited speakers, the IAF will select two speakers from its open invitation to present their essays. Each presentation will be 10 minutes, can include slides, and should connect with one or some of the following themes: Frank Gibney; Industrial Heritage; Just Transition; Peatlands; Peatlands Architecture.

On November 9th, the Workers’ Villages: What Next? colloquium will bring together academics, architects and community members to think together about the legacy and future story of the Bord na Mona villages. This will be followed by a public talk to formally launch the Workers’ Villages exhibition.

The exhibition will delve into the social history of the villages, with video interviews and exhibition materials for visitors to look through and get a sense of what life in the villages was like during their time as Bord na Móna estates.

To submit, send an abstract (200 words max) to engagement@architecturefoundation.ie before 5 pm November 1st. Selected presenters will receive a 200e fee.

Workers’ Villages project is funded through Creative Ireland’s Creative Climate Action Fund, aimed at supporting communities at the heart of Ireland’s Just Transition process.
