New Life for Old Buildings – Site Visit Series: Dún Laoghaire

Location: Dun Laoghaire.
You can watch a short video about this site visit below.

Are you in the process of bringing a vacant property back into use? Perhaps you have an empty shop you want to turn into a home? Join us in Dun Laoghaire on February 11th to view a retail-to-home conversion in progress, and meet other people who are also undertaking this labour of love.

This is the first of three site-visits organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation aimed at sharing knowledge among those who are bringing vacant properties back into use. Each site visit will be hosted by a property owner who is undertaking their own project and will be followed by a nearby cup of tea and chat. This will be a chance to swap tips, woes (and joys!), and learn from eachother.

Our first site visit will be to Dún Laoghaire, where returned emigrant Nick Taaffe has been converting the empty barbershop, joining a number of other homes on his street which until recently were commercial units.

In connection with this site-visit series, the IAF are hosting a New Life for Old Buildings event on February 10th in the Science Gallery, Dublin, which explores the potential of our many vacant buildings. Booking for this event is available here.

Established in 2005, the IAF is an independent organisation dedicated to the promotion of architecture as culture. We encourage people to engage with their built environment, to inspire new ways of thinking about architecture.

Irish Architecture Foundation core funders: Arts Council of Ireland; Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage; and Office of Public Works.

The second site visit will take place in Cloughsjordan and you can book your ticket here
